Singapore - Day 5: Botanical Gardens and Dempsey Hill

Saturday, June 9th - Today we leisurely spent the day looking at the botanical gardens and shopping at Dempsey Hill.  We woke up and lounged around this morning.  Patrice made us breakfast tacos, which were delicious.  After a nice clam morning, we got ready and drove to the Singapore Botanical Gardens.  (Ernie and Elliott took a sailing lesson so they were able to drop us off.....this meant no cab!! Woohoo!!)
We got to the gardens and immediately got a map to being our walking tour.  There was so much to see there!!  We walked around the entrance of the gardens.  It was very pretty, but VERY humid. (It had rained last night so the air was incredible sticky.)  We really wanted to go see the Orchid Gardens so we headed the way.

Random. What is this??

Hot and exhausted after walking around in the sticky air.

The best iced lemon tea!!

After we were done at the Botanical Gardens, we walked to the other side of the park toward the MRT station.  Right outside is this little shopping center that has cute little restaurants and shops.  We ate at a place called "relish."  It is known for having really good burgers.  I had a delicious caesar salad - it was refreshing to have a light lunch!

After lunch we took a cab to Dempsey Hill.  This place used to be an old area of British barracks when the British occupied the island as a territory in the 1800's.  Many of the buildings on the hill are still the old barracks but are now turned into shops and restaurants.  We walked around and looked at the different shops.
There was this one shop we went in called Shang antiques.  There was a little old man that introduced himself to us and began telling us about a lot of the things in the shop.  he told us about the rain drums (pictured below).  Rain drums were out in the rice fields and would notify workers of rain because when the rain would hit the drum it would make a sound.  We bought some rice holders at this shop which are really neat.

As we were picking out rice holders, the man began asking us what day of the week we were born.  He began to explain to us that the day of the week we were born has significant meaning to our personality.  I was born on a Wednesday.....the man told me that my Buddha was the Buddha holding the bowl (pictured below.)  This stance of Buddha means giving and compassion, unconditionally.  The man said that I am a giver, that I give to others before myself, and that I give unconditionally.  With a lot of things that have happened in my life recently...this is eerily accurate.  It was really neat to hear him talk. He told Jenna and Patrice what their day meant....and they were very accurate too!!

Another form of the Buddha with the bowl.

This is the wisdom/teaching sign for Buddha.

This Buddha's hands are showing the sign for compassion, which describes me.

After an interesting shopping trip at Shang Antiques and a few other stores on Dempsey Hill, we met up with Ernie and Elliott for an early dinner (for them....dessert for us!)  We went to the restaurant called "house".  It was really cute and had a delicious menu.  Jenna ordered Strawberry Shortcake and I ordered a Salted Caramel Banana Cake.  It was soooooo good!!!

Cute newspaper-esque menu at the restaurant.

Our delicious desserts.

After dinner, we walked to another store where they had lots of birds out of their cages.  It was neat to see them up close!!

It was at this place that I received my very first Singaporean mosquito bite. OUCH....that sucker hurt!!

After dinner, we came home early and relaxed in the living room.  We talked and laughed and watched some tv.  I was able to read some more of my book before going to bed early.

Tomorrow, we are going to church at a Singaporean Church of Christ and then off to see the cable cars! :)
